Diggle Festival

Today moored up in Diggle pool for the Diggle festival and celebration of bicentenary of the opening of Standedge Tunnel organised by the Huddersfield Canal Society.

BW have allowed boats to moor overnight at Diggle for the first time in 10 years since the canal reopened, the HCS are campaigning to remove the restrictions on mooring at this beautiful location to allow boats to visit the summit without passing directly through the tunnel. In all some 16 boats have made it to the Boat Gathering.

Moored behind us is Horse boat Elland along with Bilbo the horse. They are also heading for Leeds so no doubt we will be seeing more of them over the next week.

Chelonian is moored nearest the tunnel and decked out in bunting for the occasion having travelled from New Mills on the peak forest canal via Bollington on a windy Macclesfield canal then down the Marple flight and via the lower peak forest to Ashton where we joined the Huddersfield Narrow Canal (via a short section of the Ashton canal if you must) and made a leisurely climb up to Diggle, stopping at Stalybridge, Roaches Lock and Wool Road (Uppermill) on our way.

Tomorrow we continue the journey to Leeds starting with the 3 1/4 mile passage through the tunnel then down the Marsden flight to Slaithwaite.
